Helen Desterhaft Griffith, 100, of Edgewater, FL., passed away peacefully on March 18th, 2021 at the “Brilliance of Edgewater Assisted Living.” Helen was born in Mansfield, Ohio to the late Herman and Rose Desterhaft on November 10, 1920, graduated from Madison Senior High School and was active in sports throughout her school years taking leadership roles on her volleyball and basketball teams. Helen met her husband, Earl Griffith, while working at Westinghouse, marrying in 1945 and were together for 60 years. Together they owned and operated the club 13, night club off Route 13 in Mansfield, Ohio and Mrs. Griffith stayed active with her three children shuttling them to numerous activities and sporting events. Helen was an avid golfer, winning many tournaments at various courses in Mansfield, Ohio. In 1973, the Griffiths moved to Avon Park, FL. where they both continued their love of golf. Mrs. Griffith had two hole-in-one shots the same month, 23 years apart (December 9, 1984 and December 9, 2007). She played 18 holes of golf up to about five years ago shooting in the 80’s and 90’s. Helen and her husband were members of the First United Presbyterian Church in Avon Park, FL. where Helen sang in the choir. In 2001 they moved to New Smyrna Beach, FL. to be closer to their youngest daughter and grandson. Helen and Earl joined the New Smyrna Beach Municipal Golf Course in 2001. In 2005 Mr. Griffith passed away, but Helen continued on with her passion of golf. They both attended Coronado Community United Methodist Church where Helen was active in the Priscilla Circle and also was a 40 year lifetime Weight Watcher member. Helen is survived by her three children, Jerry Griffith of Mansfield, OH., Trudy O’Brien (Dennis) of Sun City West, AZ, Beverly Hendricks (Roger Fain) of Edgewater, FL. and seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. Griffith is predeceased in death by her parents, Herman and Rose Desterhaft, her husband Earl Griffith, four sisters, a brother, her son-in-law Ross Hendricks and daughter-in-law Victoria Griffith. The family would like to thank the owner and staff of the “Brilliance of Edgewater Assisted Living” for their kind support and also Vitas Hospice staff who took excellent care of our Mother.
