Paul Ernest Hanover

September 13, 1946 ~ September 15, 2019

Paul Hanover passed away at his home suddenly on Sunday, September 15, 2019. He was 73. Paul was born on September 13, 1946 in Buffalo, NY. He graduated from Buffalo’s Canisius High School in 1964, and from Georgetown University in 1968. That same year Paul married the former Marcia Horwitz and enrolled in Officer Candidate School, subsequently accepting a commission in the U.S. Marine Corps. He served on active duty for 28 years as a jet pilot, unit commander, program manager and more, ultimately retiring as a Colonel. He had a second career as a defense contractor during which he relocated to Heathrow, FL and eventually semi-retired. Paul loved action novels, adventure games, and relaxing on his patio. He also loved music in many forms and was active in barbershop quartets and choruses for over 20 years.

Paul is survived by his wife of fifty-one years, Marcia, his brother Mark, his three children Paul, Sarah, and Sean, and his eight grandchildren: Rebecca, Sean, Joseph, Patrick, Mary, Ethan, Travis, and Margaret. He dearly loved his family, and they him.

He will be laid to rest at Quantico National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Paul’s memory to the Central Florida Marine Corps Foundation at https://cfmarinecorpsfoundation.org.

Marcia. My thoughts are with you and the family. I was in the same squadrons with Paul including VMA(AW)-224 when we were on a deployment to Iwakuni in the early 70s and Jess Randall was the CO. I remember an instance when shortly after arriving at a happy hour at the club Paul and I were talking and he was not happy. He was missing you badly. I hope you don’t mind but I sent Paul’s obit on to the Intruder Association so they can get the word on Paul to his friends and fellow Marines. Best wishes, Steve Foster.

Paul and I served together in 1973 at Marine Corps Air Station Bogue Field. I replaced Paul when he rotated to Japan for duty . A great man, a great Marine. Larry Walton

So sorry to hear of Paul’s passing. We served together in the 70’s in VMA (AW) 224 and flew together many times. Paul was a pleasure to work with and a great Squadronmate. He was also very instrumental in my first assignment to HQMC where I replaced him in the Monitor Shop – a job that, as Paul promised, was very good for my career. Fair winds and following seas Paul.
